This has already been explored on other forums so I felt like posting a discussion on Arocalypse.

The test: http://www.hemingways.org/GIDinfo/sage/test.htm
In depth analysis: http://www.hemingways.org/GIDinfo/sage/tech.htm

The other day I found a gender test called SAGE (Sex and Gender Explorer) which attempts to take a somewhat scientific approach to determining brain gender, gender expression (both physical and social) and overall appearance.

Of course the validity of this test is questionable at best; still, it was a fun little experiment in comparing my expectations to my results. A lot of questions and concerns that people on other forums had were answered in the test analysis as well as the precursor on the test page so I suggest anyone who is confused may want to read those.

One note that I will make that isn't mentioned except for at the end of the test is that they use this word "anallophilic" to describe asexuality.

I'm interested in seeing the skew of people's overall results, as well as whether they found their results accurate or not. I think this discussion may serve some purpose in determining the accuracy of this test. Feel free to post your results and thoughts in the comments!

I did this a while ago, it was quite interesting to do. I'm pretty sure I got androgynous, although I'll do it again in a bit and see.

I remember finding some of the questions quite odd (lots of stuff about being aroused?) and I think there was some stuff about how you present yourself - which makes sense - but as someone who wants to present in a more masc/androgynous but hasn't had the courage yet... I don't think I remember finding an answer that'd fit me. Eh, I'll try again and see what happens.

Edit: I did it again and got androgynous (possible female to male). Kind of accurate, but I consider myself more masc than androgynous so...

Some of the questions were really odd. Some were just unnecessarily repeated, too. What was with those picture ones? It doesn't give you anywhere near enough time to look at them.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh I hate this test, it's based on so many sexist stereotypes and determines whether you're transgender based on gender identity disorder criteria (which is not inclusive of all transgender people). I took it once and it said I was an androgynous lesbian woman even though I'm an androgynous queer transman. >:( Guess I don't conform to stereotypes enough to qualify as a real man™. *sits in corner and pours salt everywhere*

Pfff.

-I'm not American enough for this test. Like the assumption that people own a car or even need one, there were cultural references that I had to google, etc.

-I've got dyslexia and dyscalculia, is that a gender identity now?

-This thing is very sexist

It told me I look androgynous (I'm more like a hard femme), but think/socialize in a feminine way (whatever that means) and drag is neat (Its fun and pretty on others of all genders, but I don't do drag, and I don't have any fetish for crossdressing). ....I guess?

Well, that was a strange experience. I've been trying to figure out if I experience dysphoria, and now I know I do because the beginning of this set it off quite baddly.
  • I don't drive so lots of the questions were unanswerable, which is weird on a gender test.
  • At one point it asked me to measure myself, but didn't specify units.
  • Apparently you can't just find housework, DIY and crafts enjoyable/satisfying/relaxing, it must be highly gendered, negative or arousing.
  • For something that includes androgynous it goes on about the gender binary a lot
  • For the video games question there was no stratergy game option :(
  • Also, very American.

I think my favourite part is my results say I'm Androgynous, but then that I'm 'Female to Male possible Transsexual'. I put down the accuracy as other because on the one hand I kind of match with the narratives of FtM so I'm not surprised it picked that up, but on the other I'm agender which I don't feel this test considers as an option? It seems to go male, female, some sort of inbetween area. Oh, and I don't look masculine, I don't know where it got that idea from.

Yeah, that part was super weird. I enjoy being a woman, but the only thing that gets wet while I wash the dishes...you guessed, my hands?! I get it, some people totally do get off on these things, but that has to do with fetishes not gender.

I don't even gender household tasks and stuff like cooking? Its basic survival, you feed yourself, you keep yourself and your surroundings clean and mostly functional...everyone does these things.

Now that I think about it, its also ableist af. Like it assumes that you hear, that you have allistic standard social skills, that you just can do maths, that you are able to see those tiny pictures, etc.

How does whether or not you like maths or are good at it have any affect on your gender or sexuality??? This test is getting more and more stupid as I go through it! How does whether or not you have bipolar disorder affect anything? I never go to the beach! None of the 'removing hair' options fit me. I don't look for erotica... Whether I like poetry??? Really? My driving skill? My sense of direction?

This test is so fucking sexist. >.<

How does what my family is like affect anything? HOW WOULD 'DRESSING AS THE OPPOSITE SEX' TURN ME ON? What does that even MEAN anyway? Ugh. Oh and what my middle name ends with affects my gender. Yep. Totally.

Sooooo. I'm apparently androgynous. Which is as close to gender neutral as they could get I suppose. My appearance is masculine. Which is true I guess. I have a male brain apparently. I socialise in an androgynous manner, which I hope is true I guess. I don't have major conflicts about my gender identity though. And I'm not an FtM transgender person.

Does it group gender and sexuality together or something?

A couple of things that were mentioned in the analysis that I linked

- A lot of the questions were just filler. Although they didn't specify which ones, a good portion of the test was useless questions to tire out the test taker and make them answer the important ones more honestly

- That being said all the questions have different weightings too. So a lot of things are pretty insignificant

- You can skip questions! It says this at the beginning of the test. I certainly had to skip a handful that didn't apply to me

The sexuality stuff comes from the fact that it tries to take into account people who might take the test who have a fetish related to things like cross dressing.

How cruel of them >:(

I did the test once upon a time and remember that it was extremely tedious and indeed required good knowledge of the US culture...

It described me as an androgynous MtF crossdresser with mild inner conflicts, which is fair enough.

Here are my results:

S.A.G.E. Test Results

Your Raw Score is: 550, which indicates that overall you are Feminine

Your appearance is Feminine

Your brain processes are mostly that of a Female person.

You appear to socialize in a androgynous manner.

You believe you have major conflicts about your gender identity.

You indicated you are physically Intersexed to some degree.

ANALYSIS:

Since you indicated you were born with an Intersex condition, it is likely that this has caused you some degree of gender conflict because society in general is not accepting or understanding of gender ambiguity. Since it is difficult to live in a purely androgynous gender role, please check the most appropriate analysis below.

NOTES:

  • Your answers indicate you have altered your physical appearance to look like the opposite sex.
  • Your Answers indicate your psychological state has likely prevailed since you were quite young.

ANALYSIS AS Male:

Male to Female Transsexual, either post-operative or in transition

NOTES:

  • Your answers indicate you have altered your physical appearance to look like the opposite sex.
  • Your Answers indicate your psychological state has likely prevailed since you were quite young.

ANALYSIS AS Female:

Female to Male Crossdresser

NOTES:

  • Your answers indicate you have altered your physical appearance to look like the opposite sex.
  • Your Answers indicate your psychological state has likely prevailed since you were quite young.
  • Statistically, Homosexual crossdressers have no desire to actually BE the '+thatSex+', but usually engage in such activity as a parody or celebration of the opposite sex, rather than as a means of sexual gratification, enhancement, or stress relief. Many are entertainers in DRAG revues.

Some of it is accurate, some isn't. I consider my gender expression androgynous or fluid, not feminine. And I'm muscular, have facial hair, and have broad shoulders so my appearance in general is probably pretty androgynous too.

Obviously, I lean toward female - I like the description of "if boys are chocolate milkshakes and girls are strawberry milkshakes, then I'm a vanilla milkshake with strawberries mixed in". And I present masculine a lot, I want to do so more often, but I also don't identify as male. But I'm also not strictly female and I don't think I qualify as a crossdresser for that reason.

- None of the two-second pictures worked for me.

- None of the hair removal options applied because my hormones are a mess. Where is my "armpits and face" option

- Possible ftm is interesting but not accurate. I've pondered being nonbinary but ehh. I think I'm just painfully apathetic to gender as it applies to me, too apathetic to commit to anything. giant shrug

- General agreed mumbling about stereotypes and arousal questions

Oh yeah doing housework makes me so horny. Seriously, WTF. Who gets turned on by housework? It's weird, I couldn't say "I enjoy sewing because I like making things," I had to either hate it or be turned on by it or like it because it's "woman's work."

Also, apparently I am FTM trans? Well, that's news to me... I guess it did get it right that I am somewhat androgynous at least.

Several of those questions were also impossible to answer as a sex-repulsed, nonlibidoist asexual.

Results spoilered below.

I wonder what the scale is that they use here. -450? Uh,  OK. Is -1000 totally male or something?

Why a crossdresser, I have no idea. Never done it, answered the questions honestly, but hey, I'm apparently a crossdresser. I don't have any problem with people doing that, so I guess that's where the score came from.

And you know, whenever I vacuum, I just get so turned on. The sound of the dirt going into the vacuum, it's just so hot. I wanna go vacuum the carpets now, even though I did it an hour ago.

Your Raw Score is: -595, which indicates that overall you are Masculine

You appear to socialize in a androgynous manner.

You believe you have mild conflicts about your gender identity.

You indicated your were born Male.

ANALYSIS:

So this was fairly accurate. I'm going to go through every point and judge its accuracy.

  • Accurate.
  • Accurate, although, I don't need a test to tell me this because I can just look in a mirror.
  • Fair enough, even though I don't feel male (I'll explain this).
  • I don't even know how to judge this, I never gendered how I socialise.
  • Accurate.

Analysis and Notes: I'm assuming by crossdresser it means that I like wearing women's clothes, which is totally false. I mostly think that women's clothes are stupid, especially high heels and skirts. I can see why it thinks I am a crossdresser, I do fantasize about having a female body. Even if I did though, I still wouldn't wear the majority of women's clothes. Also what it thinks my motivation for this might is just wrong. I just feel like I'd feel better with a female body. I don't want to "explore the Female gender role" because I don't feel female. I don't feel male either. In fact, the mild conflicts come from when I was 16 and I had to detach all aspects of my personality from my physical sex. That's why I don't feel male, my personality is just who I am, and it has nothing to do with my gender.

But Zema, if you don't identify as male, then why do you have it as your gender on your profile? Two reasons:

1) If you ever meet me, you'd never be able to tell that I didn't identify as male. As above, my brain processes are similar to that of an average male. I look physically male (because I am), but I also present as male.

2) What else would I put? I don't identify with any gender; not even agender. So it makes sense to just put my physical sex as my gender because it is easier and because the first point I made.

One last thing: don't ever attach my personality and physical sex even if they appear to be related. It hurts.

The analysis that I linked says that the scores range from +650 to -650. Where the boundaries are I don't know, but it would seem that the numbers are disproportionately androgynous.

It's somewhat accurate, My next cosplay project is Hiccup's Race to the Edge outfit.

To be honest- I'd say my conflicts have more to do with the sexism in culture and society, rather than anything to do with how comfortable I am in my own body.

I wish I had your love for vacuuming :D Maybe I just have a wrong (too old) cleaner and haven't yet found The Right One™.

I thought I hated hoovering until I found this gorgeous grey and blue monster, fantastic suction, picks up all the shed hair. You'll change your mind later, you just have to find the right model, trust me!

(Ok I never hated vacuuming but I just needed to gush about my new hoover, because apparently I live an exciting life.)

Ummmm... so apparently I'm androgynous for everything. Which, of course, is absolute bullshit. Just because I don't fit stereotypes doesn't make me androgynous... It also went on to say I was a crossdresser... Why do half of the questions not have an option for "no I don't do that" without being transphobic as fuck? Is there not a way to say "I don't crossdress" or any other question without phrasing it like "Eww no that's gross why would I do that?" This test makes no sense and is based off of stereotypes...

I'm not really sure how I appear but I don't think this quiz was a very good evaluator anyway.

There seemed to be quite a few questions where you could end up trying to pick the least daft answer.
Guessing they expected skipping the question if you had no strong feelings either way.

I found that funny, although I had pretty much the same experience as Cassiopeia. What bothered me, though (although it would certainly not change my result - androgynous, feminine appearance, male socialising style (?), androgynous brain processes), was that there was no option indicating that neither was a choice: sexual preference? men, women, bisexual (or that weird neologism...). Whom did you play with as a kid? same gender, opposite gender, both. Your gender identity? male, female, both (androgynous). And so on. Geez, I prefer neither gender sexually, I played alone as a kid, I do not identify in any way as male, so "androgynous" is not an option, and no alternative to classic female. What about the existence of absence in this whole issue?!

So yeah this thing assumes everyone wants to drive (which isn't a necessity in Europe) and feels a bit backward with no N/A option for arousal. And WTF is with not just calling it asexual.
