Canonically arospec characters?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this is a topic already, sorry about that. I haven't been able to find a thread specifically about this and didn't want to look too long since I don't know what counts as necroposting on here. That being said:

Since arospec representation is so rare, who are some of your favorite canonically arospec characters?

Mine are:

To start with the obvious: Georgia from Loveless. I know this book is kinda everywhere in a-spec circles and some people are probably sick of hearing about it but there's some parts of her experiences I found myself relating to a lot especially her realisation that enjoying fictional romance and actually wanting romance in real life are two different things so that's why I still wanted to mention her.

Robert from Inkwyrm. Robert is and probably always will be one of my favorite Inkwyrm characters aside from Mella and the fact that he's aro makes me like him even more.

Sir Talfryn and Jet Siquliak are both aromantic and both from the Penumbra Podcast. Sir Talfryn is my favorite Penumbra Podcast: Second Citadel character. Jet is cool but the Juno Steel series has so many cool characters that he's probably not even in my top five.

Friday Rescher from Hello from the Hallowoods. I love hfth so much.

Another obvious choice but: Lilith Clawthorn from The Owl House.

All of these are aromantic characters so if anyone has recommendations for characters who are canonically greyaro I'd love that since I'm greyaro

I dunno, I guess Jughead? Luffy from One Piece? It’s hard for me to exactly pick a “favorite” when there’s so few anyway (headcanons are nice and all, but there’s extremely few characters who can be definitively called canonically aro). I haven’t even read One Piece.

Plus there really aren’t allo aro characters out there, so it’s hard for me personally to actually feel represented by most aro characters… I heard there’s one in like, some book I’ve never read, and one in Loveless who doesn’t get treated very well. I’d like to see more characters like me someday, but I don’t have very high hopes for that happening any time soon.

In the end, I guess I’ll have to go with Jughead, since he’s the most enjoyable and relatable canon aro to me. Unless Data from Star Trek is canon? I can’t remember if he is or not. Gwen’s alright too, but I like Jughead better.

Alastor from Hazbin Hotel (aroace)

Wendy from the new Peter Pan and Wendy (aroace)

Barbie from well… Barbie (aroace)

Ken from Barbie (ace)

Nimona (aroace and gender-fluid)

Saiki K (aroace)

Wait - Barbie's aroace? I haven't seen the movie yet, but... this is interesting. In a good way.

Keladry of Mindelan from PROTECTOR OF THE SMALL!

Granted, I haven't read these books in many years...but I was internet pals with Tamora Pierce for a while so Kel will always mean a lot to me.

I think you may be misunderstanding what canon means 😅 (Also, no spoilers, please!)

I know, I’m headcannoning some of them, but I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if they made that official.

Margot Robbie confirmed that she's asexual, but didn't say or imply anything about aromanticism if I remember correctly.

Either way, still great! It's nice to see confirmed ace characters in media.

Can't tell as the only media I've seen with a canon aro character is Loveless and I didn't like Georgia that much.

I heard rumors that Isaac in Heartstopper will be aroace though, and I like him so he'll be my favorite.

I don't think necroposting is any concern for those kinds of threads.

The book record of a spaceborn few has a character which states she's aromantic. She doesn't use the term but no other character labels their romantically or sexuality either so she's as explicit as she could be.

thats fine

honestly dont worry about necroposting. The site has a function which locks off replies on really (really really) old threads so that bit doesnt matter. as for new threads, go ahead and make them. Most people arent going to trawl through all the old topics to find stuff like this so honestly, putting up a new one which goes to the top of the category is great and tends to get more new responses.

It really doesnt matter if a couple of things are roughly the same.

Remember... (spoilers)

Spoiler

Barbie has no physical sexuality. This is canon. She's a doll after all, and she also says this very bluntly to the construction workers.

It's pretty very obvious that she cannot feel sexual attraction. It's just that the label "asexual" doesn't appear. Margot Robbie also said this in an interview.

But later she becomes a real human ... so is she still ace then?

I kinda hope that she is, I wouldn’t be surprised since her personality and most everything else is maintained.

Nita Sanchez and Kovit Sangwaraporn — Market of Monsters by Rebecca Schaeffer— aroace — queerplatonic partners in crime conquering a semi-magical black market

Morgan Hault — The Great Library by Rachel Caine — aromantic — she and the main character play out a Standard YA Romantic SubplotTM then realize “oh crap… we’re in a Standard YA Romantic SubplotTM“ and just stay best friends instead (it’s hilarious)

Emma Robledo — Sidekick Squad by C. B. Lee — aroace — superhero without powers who is smarter than all the other protagonists

Vanja Ros and Emeric Conrad — Little Thieves by Margaret Owen — demiromantic demisexual — a thief and a “sanctimonious coatrack” detective-ing, making friends, and dealing with that one time Vanja accidentally started a cult

Sal Vidon — Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez — aromantic — I’m just living for the line “If you were any more aro, I’d shoot you out of a bow.”

Glain Wathen — The Great Library by Rachel Caine — aroace — token badass leading an army to overthrow the dystopian Library of Alexandria

Adair — Market of Monsters by Rebecca Schaeffer — aromantic — ice cream-loving kelpie who jokes about his murder basement
