A perfect blend of fantasy and eldritch horror. Also, I bought this book in hardcover just so I could enjoy the woodcut illustrations made by the writer (he has a Tumblr!) And right now I'm reading 'Bitch: On the Female of the Species' by Lucy Cooke. Just philosophy of painting. And painting, in the classical understanding of the Renaissance, was about creating a window to the world, how the world reveals itself to sight. That's also why real gold (which was common in medieval paintings) fell out of use at that time: the ideal was to imitate the effect of gold as seen from a certain perspective, not simply use gold (which may not fit in because it reacts to real-world-light instead of light-in-painting). Obviously, the modern understanding of painting transcends this, but I've only read 25% of the book.
