  1. Aw, it looks so peaceful and soft ☺️
  2. You mean not yet! True, the proportions are different, but realistically, no living human fits the vitruvian man either. For example, my arms are really long and I have a friend who has a huge torso. But just as in real life, in manga the arms still attach to the shoulders and the eyes (although huge) are in the middle of the head. So looking at what manga does different and translating that takes practice but you are well on the way. Please don't call your drawing embarrassing, it is part of an ongoing process to get better at drawing. That's exactly it: Anyone who is just looking for a quick 'hack' to draw something nice on a birthday card will love what Chris Hart has to offer. But if you really want to learn the principles, you will find that those books are not enough. And then you move on. And your points on the ancients are right too. We also must not forget that drawing in the middle ages used to be a means of telling stories without using words since most people couldn't read. Showing a compelling story was more important then drawing an awesome building. Well the trick is to not do those 1000 figure poses in a row ;) Contrary to the experiment where the students had two weeks to produce as much as they could, a natural drawing process is much more organic. Get yourself a simple, small notebook to take with you and some drawing tools. Bonus points if it all fits together in a small pouch. Pro tip, don't go looking for a 'nice' one, because then you'll never use it. The more generic it is the better. The one I'm using at the moment does have a pretty cover, but the blank covers the store sold had lines and I personally dislike that: Try to fit in short bursts of doodling during your day. If you travel by bus or train, that is great for drawing quick life drawings. Studying real people works better then drawing from pictures, but if you find that a bit daunting then pictures is fine to start with. Set a timer for yourself, 5 to 10 minutes per session is perfect. That timer will force you to look for shapes and lines instead of making a detailed, realistic drawing. My life drawings always look sort of cartoon y, because that is my preferred style. I have to make an effort to draw a 'real' person. But this person waiting for the bus was basically a walking cartoon: When you feel like making something nice, you can use one or more of those quick sketches as a base. So variation is key here to stay motivated. I don't mind, I love teaching and I don't need to attach a price to everything I do ;) Anyway I hope this was somewhat helpful.
  3. Oh don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to suggest you don't need some form of instruction or teacher. Would be a little weird since I'm an art teacher ;) My point was how people tend to look down on forms of instructions that are focused on (what they would consider) 'low-art'. I taught myself to draw action poses by looking at anime, mainly Dragon Ball Z (rip Akira Toriyama) But my art school teachers wanted me to drop that practice as it wasn't considered 'good art'. I mean, I understand and teach the importance of looking at the classics and learning from their long journey from the stiff, awkward poses in ancient times to the dynamic and exciting ones in the Renaissance (great examples by the way!) but I feel you shouldn't box yourself in. Anything that inspires you to draw more is a great tool to get better. Because getting better means drawing loads, trying out new techniques and challenging yourself. I saw an experiment once were a group of students was tasked with learning to make a clay pot in 2 weeks time. Half of the group had to make as many pots in those 2 weeks as they could, while the other half got to use that time to make just one, but as perfect as possible. As you can probably imagine, the quantity group made a lot of really ugly pots, but at the end they had a fairly good grasp on which techniques worked well and which didn't. The quality group all made 1 nice looking pot, but they were a lot more frustrated by their learning process. The moral of that story is to not stare blindly at your art if you can't make it work. It's okay to just put it away and start fresh. It will speed up learning and it keeps frustrations at bay.
  4. Don’t worry about not knowing were you are on the spectrum, you are welcome here! We have a lot of topics about books, music and animals and there are quite a few lovers of Star Wars here (I like it too, mostly the ‘side stories’ and the Old Republic games.) Also, the nice bit about a forum is that you don’t have to reply fast or a lot. It’s a more chill medium than say Discord. That’s what I like about it anyway.
  5. I’m pretty sure the DX stands for ‘Deluxe’. Nintendo did that way back with a couple of Gameboy games that got a remaster for the Gameboy color. I guess this version has some extra options and/or content then?
  6. Wow I never knew they were called that, I've been rolling D20's for years. So maybe some cats playing Dungeons and Dragons?
  7. I used to, worked there for 3,5 years before I had to leave because the bookstore had financial troubles unfortunately. It was the best ‘regular’ job I have had (I’m a freelancer artist/teacher now) and I really hope you get to work in one someday :D
  8. I don’t know the book but I checked some reviews on Goodreads and the consensus seems to be that it’s great to have a book about ace and aro rep but that the plot is not really great. Of course that is just the opionion of some other unknown people on the internet, but if you are having trouble finding motivation to finish a book then right now this might not be the book for you ¯\-(ツ)-/¯ And just to be clear: That’s ok! Reading should be fun, no point in forcing yourself to finish a book if you are not engaged or intrigued by it. I also used to feel that I ‘had to’ finish a book even if I didn’t like it, especially when I still worked at a book store. But eventually that will make you dislike reading, so I really don’t recommend it 😬
  9. Christopher Hart's drawing books are super popular with the kids I teach. It looks cool, colourful and not too difficult, so I guess it speaks to them. I see them as just another tool, like most drawing books really. In my personal experience there is no perfect book to teach you to draw better or different. But drawing books can help to see how others do it, and that will certainly help on your journey. I'm currently reading 'Solo: Building a Remarkable Life of Your Own' by Peter McGraw. He hosts a podcast by the same name, and so far the book is a nice compilation of all the data he has gathered. I also really like the 'Solo love letters' that are sprinkled around the book, written by the community that has formed around the Solo podcast.
  10. I made an aro Mosasurus Hoffmanni to celebrate (I kind of cheated, because I have actually drawn this one in a different colour scheme to sell on my website but shhhhhh) Enjoy the buff sea lizard!
  11. I saw a post on Reddit about some edited Valentine’s Day cards: Aro approved 👍🏻
  12. Yes it’s a super chill game, I really recommend it if you like games to take it slow. Which I guess you do, since you like animal crossing :) I played that one way to much during the lockdown and eventually sold it out of self preservation 😅
  13. Oh no, I missed it. 🙁 I always forget to check it since I only subscribed to PS Plus Essential for Online Gaming. Yeah, I only subscribed so my save games would be 'safe'. I don't even play online, couch co-op is the way for me. But this months selection includes a game called Rollerdrome: It's a hectic 3rd person shooter... on roller blades 🛼 The concept is really cool, you are a newcomer in a messy en spectacular blood sport. Every level you are dropped in an area where you have to shoot a bunch of poor Rollerdrome employees. Performing stunts while you do so restocks your ammo and ramps up your score. A bullet time is available as well. Unfortunately I really suck at these type of games, but as luck would have it, the game allows you to toggle options such as invincibility so I can be really cool for more than 5 seconds 😅 December had a lot of nice sales, so I bought a couple of cheap games for Switch that I got around to playing last week: Moonrise Fall: Slow paced exploration game with little to no tutorial where you follow the directions from a journal to find and photograph a bunch of cryptids. Looks really nice, gameplay is mostly fun except for some more tedious puzzle elements in the 'temple' enviroments. Also, taking a picture means keeping the cryptid in frame and pushing a couple of buttons as they are prompted. Two of these cryptids move around and I actually had to look at a youtube video to realize I had to keep the middle of the camera centered on the cryptid (as opposed to simply keep them in frame) to get those prompts to show 🙄 Lil Gator game: I really loved this. You are a gator boy who used to play a wildly imaginative game with his sister, who made all the assets out of cardboard and plywood for you to smash. But big Sis has gone to college to learn how to be a game developer and you are rallying all your friends (old and new) to create an even bigger game to get her to play again. And playing is the main thing you do in this game, from sliding down slides and using a swing to collecting really hilarious items such as one of those sticky hand things. A lot of the game is a big wink to The Legend of Zelda, mainly Breath of the Wild. But in this game, nothing breaks, you can't die and falling damage is unheard of. Also, you can change the clean (Zelda Wind Waker inspired) graphics to be really 'cronchy' giving it the look of another favorite game of mine, 'A short hike'. 🏅 Didn't this come out ... 9 months ago? Have they finally fixed all the bugs? 😄 So many different games and all the same issue: they were released in an obviously unfinished state. We really shouldn't accept this! Let's not preorder anything or convince ourselves that when we read about "tech issues" it won't be that bad! OK, on February 29th, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come out ... <preorder> 🏃‍♀️ Eeeeeehm nope... I mean, they fixed all the game breaking ones, and the performance mode is slightly better then it was but still completely unacceptable to sell this for full price for the state it is in. I am definitely not buying the inevitable third game until it has been out for at least a year... shame that will mean the story will probably be spoiled for me though...
  14. Well I played Sable anyway, because it was the 'free' game om PS Plus Essential in December :) Not really unplayable, although I did have to reload from time to time whenever Sable got stuck in a part of the scenery or if Simoon wouldn't show up after calling. Still, super pretty game and really chill. Also, speaking of unplayable, I finally finished Jedi: Survivor yesterday ✨ I got a little uneasy with the corny romance but there is thankfully not too much of that.
  15. I’m the same, I have a friend who is really passionate about the lives of celebrities and gets genuinally upset when they die. I try to be compassionate about it, but I also really don’t get it. These people had no idea who she is, so why does it affect her so much? She is a really passionate person overal, so I guess that plays a big part.
