My German host-father asked me "Was hat deine Freundin gesagt?" in regards to the US presidential election. I looked at him blankly for a bit because I translated it as "What has your girlfriend said?" He clarified that he meant Erin, a female friend of mine (who has found me on Arocalypse and can see all the embarrassing stuff I have posted on here). See, in German, "Freundin" can mean "girlfriend" or "female friend" based on how it's used. Given that Thomas just used "Freundin" and expected me to know who I was talking about, I guess he thinks Erin is my girlfriend?? He doesn't think I have just one female friend, right? I didn't attempt to clarify my relationship with Erin because...well...I'm just not up to it today. The election has made me a wreck.

Oh yes, that classic awkward situation. In my first language we have the same possible misunderstanding, but queer people have already started to diy their way around it. They started to say something along the lines of 'she is my girfriendly' when referring to a platonic female friend. Can you do similar word butchery in german?
