frog lord looks cool

i used a simple red square to show how 50x90, 30x90 and 20x90 look as frames for whatever image might end up here.

30 high honestly looks fine to me, 50 looks a bit odd imo but could try something and see

He could be sticking out his tongue to fill the wide 250 space…

ok that is such a good idea, I like that

Aight I tried something with the tongue too:

Yes, thanks for the effort, this looks great!

What software did you use? I tried to do it with GIMP. Either I cannot use it properly or it's not suited for the job.

I don't know how to use a pixel-precise pencil with a semi-transparent color. It seems only the brush tool can do transparency, but it's not precise.

At least I did a bit of manual anti-aliasing on the inside.

Yeah... it's my first foray into pixel art... 🙃

Maybe @EGGHEAD can help us a bit. He seems to be an expert.

well i'm not classically trained but i'll share some of what i know

i use GraphicsGale for all my pixel art since it's free. it's a bit confusing, but once you get the hang of it it's a solid program (i just wish i knew if there were keyboard shortcuts, having to move to the toolbar and click everything can get annoying sometimes).

a good (paid) option would be Aseprite, though i've never used it so i can't give any tips for that. microsoft paint also works if you're fine with that lol. it's usually better to use software meant for pixel art unless you can figure out how to make it work on a different program

i'm not familiar with gimp personally but it doesn't seem like it's entirely meant for pixel art tbh

transparency with GraphicsGale i'm still sorta figuring out, but i know it has something to do with alpha channels. sometimes i can get it to work but sometimes it doesn't let me use transparency, idk why exactly though

ok, I've put @DeltaAro's initial design of frog with tongue out at the moment.

looking at it 30x90 seems absolutely fine. the concept is brilliant too.

And we still need an "Administrator" bade and a "Newbie" bade. 🙂

admin i can put in

I'm not actually sure we could do a newbie one as that is only symbolised by the little blue thing which i can only show or hide, I dont think i can do a long badge for newbie.

(or at least, i cant do any of that within invisions menus and i have no intention of editing the theme html)

We have a Frog Lord ... what might a Frog Overlord look like? 🤔

I guess to keep this small blue hand for newbies is not so bad. I mean it's only temporary, so.

Anyway, it's not a very important information (contrary to moderator / administrator) since the post count is shown right on the left of all our posts.

Hm, on mobile I can’t tell you are an admin now, apart from the purple colour that is 🤔

I used the free version of Pixel Studio for that one (because I was testing the program for use in my classes) but I usually use Aseprite because as @EGGHEAD mentioned it is best to use a program specifically for pixel art and that is in my opinion the best one.

Can the font / icon size of the GUI be increased? On 4K resolution it's really tiny.

So right now, I just changed the color of the orb to purple for the admin frog. Maybe I'll give admin frog overlord a coat?

Also if you notice, I improved the anti-aliasing on the other edges.

For the text I used the Aquaphonic Font.

Invision is programmed a bit weirdly: The rank icons correctly have an 1.4 em scaling, so you can use a high resolution image and it looks sharp while keeping the size.

The badge icons have none of that, just a bare <img> element. So we're restricted to a small 30 x 90 px image that won't really look that good, no matter what.

i'm not sure... from what i can tell there isn't but maybe there's a workaround

Thanks! I also like how it turned out with @Nix's idea.

While originally the tongue was just there to use up the empty space, with it the badge also got a funny metaphorical meaning:

The fly is a bad post which the frog lord moderator casually removes.

Looking at this thread is reminding me of a cartoon I watched when I was little. I don't remember the name of it. There was a child bear voiced by Paul McCartney who wanders from home and ends up in a cave where there are a bunch of frogs putting on a symphony. At the climax a king and queen frog, wearing a crown, a cape and everything, emerge out of the pond on lily pads. Then an owl swoops down to catch them, and Paul McCartney bear shouts "Look out!" and saves them. Then he hears his mother calling and he goes home and that's the end.

So now I tried Asesprite. Yeah, it's pretty nice.

But there's an open-source version called LibreSprite which superficially seems rather similar. 😐

And I found an IMHO even better and open-source pixel-art editor, Pixelorama, which you can use offline and as a web-app.

PS: paid vs. free of charge isn't really such an issue for me (except for really expensive stuff like Adobe Creative Cloud). I just prefer open-source software when possible because of the freedom / community aspect.

Oh cool! Thanks for the links, will try them out this week. I agree with the freedom and community aspects of open-source software, I just hadn’t bothered to look after I was recommended Aseprite by a friend.

As a teacher I really love open-source since I can recommend it to my students and they can use it at home too.
