its interesting how the explanation for that one particular universe of the rat utopia experiments keeps changing with the politics that happens to be popular at the time.

so its now a getting this sort of men need their biological perogatives or they go nuts sort of thing for this guy, but it was a threat of overpopulation/overcrowding thing, Make Room! Make Room!, how do we design a society that deals with population density without going mad.

for some people it has also been a thing to point to as an anti welfare, humans need to have challenge and suffering or we go crazy, this is what happens if all our needs are met. or its lack of some form of stimulation, ive seen arguments that the mice in that particular experiment just didnt have the ability to just do things like they would in nature which would send them mental.

at some point some bastard commentator is going to claim the problem is that the mice went woke and at that point my brain will turn to goop and fall out of my skull.

this is the bit that makes me feel old. the idea that identity is this thing its ok to try out and get wrong. Even tell other people and then say, oh, sorry, that doesnt fit anymore.. Its so different from the way I would have thought of any identity when i was in my teens.

I guess a part of that is being less concerned about the whole 'its just a phase, you'll grow out of it' mindset. being very careful about being 100% sure before you mention something because that could be used as ammo for those sorts of ideas. its honestly quite nice to look forward and see a community which is just more chill about that sort of experimentation.

I think now we have a bit more aromantic research, e.g. the aro census it would be interesting to see a bit more in terms of asking 'what should we do with this data'.

there's all this effort put into finding these things out about the community but does that really inform what we do afterwards.
