it is all the hassle of divorce without the marriage!

IIRC these work on a state basis, even though the link dosn't mention this. The more generic term is "common law marriage".

Even with all the fuss about the "marriage equality" referendum it's hard to find the what the legal status of marriage actually does in Australia. Though the de facto partner law article mentions "rights and responsibilities". Which appear to include quite a bit about property ownership and financial entanglement.
