If I had grown up in one of those places, I can guarantee that I would not have taken it well. It's just way too intimate for me.

If we assume those numbers are correct, then the proportion of people who are murdered everyday is 1000/(7*10^9)=1.429*10^-7. We can assume this proportion is probability. Therefore, the odds of being murdered are: 1.429*10^-7. (In fractions the proportion is 1/(7*10^6) and the odds are 1/6999999). So really the odds are not that high at all. Of course this is assuming that the murder rate is the same everywhere (which it isn't).
