tiger_hoods12 Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Not gonna lie, you guys, I really wish we had more representation in media. Not I know that sounds like a “no, duh” statement, but it’s true. But I wish this more for the non aros and non aces out there. There are moments where I can’t help but think that if we had more representation of aromantics and asexuals, how much of that would so many people resonate with. I looked up a statistic saying that only 1% of people worldwide identify as asexual and/or aromantic. But it is believed that that number could be much bigger if there was more representation or awareness of these two things. It honestly makes me sad knowing that. I remember a time where I felt lost and confused over my orientations and thought I was never going to figure it out. There’s probably a lot of people who feel this way as well or maybe just don’t bother trying to figure it out due to the lack of resources. I want representation for us, as well, so we can feel seen and heard, but even for all the allos/allies out there, I want them to see more representation of single people in general. That it’s not the end of the world if you live without sex and/or romance in your life. Sorry, for the slight rant. This topic has been on my mind for a while now and I wanted to talk about it. 🖤 1 Quote
Guest Kit-Kat Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 I hear you! I would love more representation in the media. Also - what you said about "the number could be much bigger if there was more representation or awareness of these two things" hit me so hard because I'm only in middle school, but I had started having a lot of aro experiences: not being attracted to anyone, being grossed out whenever my parents kissed, skipping over romance in books. I'm part of the Pride Club, and the teacher did a lesson on aromanticism one week. I remember thinking, "huh. that sounds kinda familiar." It was only because of that lesson I realized that I'm aro. Like, if I had been sick, or just decided not to go that week, I might not have understood my identity for years. BUT IF THERE WAS MORE REPRESENTATION IN THE MEDIA, I could have figured it out even before the lesson or a few weeks after. Also: my computer literally doesn't accept aromanticism as a word. Like, I had to add it to the dictionary, which is CRAZY. WE NEED MORE REPRESENTAION! Quote

I hadn’t noticed this before, but our devices not recognizing “aromanticism” as a word is so true. Also props to your teacher about addressing what it means to be aromantic. I’m glad more people are becoming more aware of asexuality and aromanticism, but because of our lack of representation, I still can’t help but be surprised when someone actually knows what it is and correctly defines them.
