The Aronauts' Official Collection of U.S. Election Support Resources

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

So the aronauts over in the discord server decided it might be nice to have a place to put links to videos, websites, games, etc. that could help anyone upset about the U.S. election get through these trying times (as well as anyone else who needs some support for whatever reason!). Feel free to post anything you think might help people feel better/relax/cheer up etc.

Putting my recommendations under a spoiler in case of length:

Spoiler

https://www.calm.com/ -- guided mindfulness/meditation exercises with nature scenes

http://seaquence.org/ -- make music sequences with little.. things that swim around? I don't know how to explain it.

http://ducksarethebest.com/ -- ducks and peppy music! WARNING: there are some bright flashy colors, so avoid this if that'll cause any issues for you.

http://thequietplaceproject.com/thethoughtsroom/?page=thethoughtsroom&lang= -- the Thoughts Room! You just type in what you're feeling and watch it disappear. This website has other neat and helpful "rooms" too!

http://www.theuselessweb.com/ -- when in doubt, theuselessweb can always be a good distraction. Just a fair warning though, I can't account for every website it might send you to, so just be aware.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Not necessarily support to make people relax but lots of lawyers are offering advice and possibly helping out financially for trans people who want to change their name/documents before any possible changes. x

Now, more than ever, it's important to be there for each other, even if you're not American. As JK Rowling put it, Trump being elected is an international issue, so this is of international importance. That being said, coping strategies are needed and useful, so I've put mine below.

Your first duty is to your mental health, so you should take care of it. After all, you can't help others without first helping yourself:
  • Exercise (if it's safe). Make sure you're in a lighted area, and if you're listening to music, make sure to only use one headphone so you can still hear stuff. If you can, use a gym.
  • Connect with people. Contact your family and friends if you can. Go see a film, have a pint, call each other on Skype if you can't get out of the house.
  • Give to others. If you can, volunteer to help people. Carry their bags, hold doors open for them, give an hour a week over to a charity shop.
  • Do something you love. Give an hour of your day over to something you enjoy doing. If you draw, draw. If you write, write.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Spoiler

This is more like a practical list of things to keep people safe.

  • Instead of panicing, plan. Think about what kind of life you want in the future, how would you be genuinely happy, and what are the steps to get there.
  • Keep minorities safe. If you see someone being bullied, start talking to them, make sure they aren't left alone with the abusive person.
  • Tag your election related posts. Use the spoiler and the read more feature. Ask for people's permission before you start venting or talking about politics.
  • If you are part of a targeted group, tone down in public if you can.
  • I know its a logical panic reaction to go dancing at the local gay bar or to go to a prayer centre. But for the next couple of weeks, you may not want to go to minority spaces as they may be targeted.
  • If you are american, you might want to have a medical check up, change your name and the gender markers on your papers, look into birth control options, and get a passport.
  • If you are into hookups and online dating, be extra suspicious.
  • Think about what you post online.
  • Celebrate your identity. Cook a big ethnic meal for your family. Watch queer movies, listen to queer music, read queer books, watch porn if you are into that. Have a pamper session. Wear your favourite underwear. Stim. Do your thing.

About how many lines does it take for text to be hidden under the "read more" feature on Facebook?

I have no idea as I haven't used facebook since like 2009, and I'll try to avoid it in the future as well.

But you can also just start the thing with cw:politics
