Today I found an aromantic musician called Moses Sumney! (I assume he's aromantic, since one of his albums is called 'Aromanticism") The music might not be to your taste, but you should check it out! Here's the link to "Aromanticism" on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/30WjNaR79shSTGB52IJTw0?si=CEDDNXOAQzOOamYPzmZYFQ

I knew about him but it's not the type of music I like to listen to, unfortunately. I've seen lots of aros say that they relate a lot to this but I .. Don't ? But it's nice to see an aro artist !

The songs I know that fit into the "power/anti romance" category are :

Some classic aro anthem :

Love love love - Of monsters and men

I am not a robot - Marina and the Diamonds

Heart heavy - Mother mother

Others :

Love Myself - Hailee Steinfeld

Friends - Anne Marie and Marshmello

We don't have to dance - Andy Black (it's about anxiety if I remember correctly but you can interpret it the way you want to)

Ribcage - Andy Black

Talk Me Down - Troye Sivan

Oh no - Marina and the diamonds

Mud Blood - Loic Nottet

Kpop :

Let's not fall in love - Bigbang (some of the lyrics give me an aro vibe)

One of a kind - G dragon

Mic Drop - BTS & Steve Aoki

Dope - BTS (it's about working hard and becoming great)

I think I'll add some in the future but for now that's all I can come up with x)

I found out about them about a week ago ! It's nice to see that we "exist" in other places than arocalypse.

Connie Glynn is an aromantic artist who has released two original songs, "Heart Eater" and "Video Boy." "Heart Eater" describes very well the feeling of thinking you're broken because you don't have romantic feelings, and "Video Boy" is about wanting a relationship with a character on a screen but having no romantic interest in real people.

I watched her video about being aro but I had no idea she could sing !

In another topic someone poster Never been in love of Will Jay. I don't know if the singer is aro or not, but he explains that in our society, too much people thinks happiness is in loving someone else, while you shoud love yourself. And his song talk about things you can relate as aro, in a happy rythme that will be stuck in your head all day.

I find Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love to also be considered an aro/apothiro song.

Maybe Joji's Yeah Right as well? At least for me, it is.

Hugh Laurie's I Hate a Man Like You is another suggestion.

More suggestions

  • NIKI's See U Never, Newsflash! and Pools (in my opinion)
  • Carla Bruni's L'amourNotre grand amour est mort and Enjoy the Silence
  • Ex Battalion's Hayaan Mo Na Sila (this song can go both ways for both sides, and is a bit 'controversial' since it became viral)
  • Charlie Puth's Attention
  • Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone, Walk Away and Hole
  • Studio Killers' All Men Are Pigs
  • Karmin's Crash Your Party (I see this as a big FU to society/media-influenced romance, sex and amatonormativity)
  • Alicia Keys' Karma
  • Jennifer Lopez's Ain't It Funny Remix (feat. Caddillac Tah and Ja Rule)
  • Iggy Azalea's Trouble (feat. Jennifer Hudson)
  • The Black Eyed Peas' Don't Lie and Shut Up
  • The Pussycat Dolls' I Don't Need A Man
  • Robbie Williams' No Regrets
  • P!nk's So What
  • Keira Knightley's Like a Fool
  • Rihanna's Take a Bow
  • Cher's Strong Enough

More suggestions! Whoo!

  • Beyoncé's Me, Myself and I
  • Lily Allen's Smile and Knock 'Em Out
  • NIKI's Chilly
  • Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) and The Trouble With Love Is
  • CeeLo Green's Fuck You
  • Ed Sheeran's Don't
  • Nessly's Make It Right (feat. Joji)
  • Post Malone's I Fall Apart and Over Now (for me, I find the second song's lyrics really dark; so take caution)
  • Rich Brian's Glow Like Dat
  • Calvin Harris' I'm Not Alone
  • Nivea's Laundromat
  • Britney Spears' Oops!...I Did It Again

@karnzter I'll have to take your word about the French ones. L'amour doesn't sound very aromantic :D

I have one in Swedish then.
Om Sanningen Ska Fram - Eric Amarillo

If we see it as a kinda satire on ideals of romantic relationships. Here is a translation of some of the lyrics:

If I listen when you're talking,
not speaking about myself,
if I say you are beautiful,
but it doesn't matter.
Because beauty is within us,
if I lie about things like that.
If i say things are good,

but don't talk about my work.

If I give you my tears,

but is strong when you are weak

Playing sweet home Alabama,

on a fire side guitar.

If I'm sure of myself
but never too full of myself.
If I'm a alpha in bed,

but never fight.

Would you sleep with my then if truth be told?
Would you sleep with me then, would you sleep with me?
Would you sleep with my then if truth be told?

@Holmbo The translation made it a romance-repulsed/cynical song for me. Is it because of the 'strange sweet taste of my lovers' skins' part in the end? Or maybe the title? Just curious to know and wonder.

I just consider that part like 'kissing/making out and above-the-belt touchy-feely with a one-time date but never going all the way'.

More suggestions:

  • Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around.../ ...Comes Around (Interlude)
  • Kelis' Trick Me
  • Kaiser Cheifs' Everyday I Love You Less and Less
  • La Roux's Bulletproof
  • Terror Jr's Heartbreaks
  • Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, I Knew You Were Trouble and Bad Blood (both the album and Kendrick Lamar-featured versions)
  • Amy Winehouse's Back to Black and Love Is a Losing Game
  • Spice Girls' Too Much and Stop
  • No Doubt's Ex-Girlfriend
  • Honey Pig's Clueless You
  • Meghan Trainor's Lips Are Movin'
  • My Chemical Romance's I'm Not Okay (I Promise) and It's Not a Fashion Statement It's a Deathwish
  • The Ting Tings' Shut Up and Let Me Go
  • Cher Lloyd's Superhero

@karnzter I was only referring to the title. Since I don't speak French and didn't read the translation.

It's okay. It took me more than 6 or 7 years since I first listened to L'amour to find out that it wasn't a positive song about love at all ?

@karnzter many of your suggestions seems plays more like breakup songs to me than aromantic. Someone who have been in romantic love but their partner didn't treat them right. Maybe my mind interprets it different.

What you said is true. I went through a catfish/loss of trust/trauma/privacy-invasion/heartbreak years ago that triggered my repulsion, cynicism, anger and judgement against romance. Post Malone's Over Now is so harsh and angry it speaks to me.

Anything with a 'heartbreak-ish' theme speaks romance repulsion in my mind. It's like telling others that there's no such thing as a perfect romance/relationship/love, it's not a severe necessity/importance, counts as a word/tale of caution/warning and everything is just an unwanted public scandal waiting to happen.

Those songs I've listed are the kind that makes me sing out loud to shut out the amatonormativity and societal/media/social/cultural influence of romance all around me.

Okay. Three last songs. Assuming these can be aro (and ace)-themed based on the lyrics:

  • Joji's Slow Dancing In the Dark
  • Tina Turner's What's Love Got to Do With It?
  • Good Charlotte's I Don't Wanna Be In Love (Dance Floor Anthem)
